We import vehicles from Japan, the UK, South Africa and Australia, and hand them over in Nairobi cleared and registered. That takes half a dozen different jobs between the auction bid and the number plates; here is what they are, and who picks up the phone when you ask about yours.
Finding the vehicle
Bidding at the Japanese auctions and buying from stock in the UK, South Africa and Australia. The brief is yours (make, model, year, budget and the ceiling you will not go above) and nothing is bid on without it.
Checking it before you commit
Reading the auction sheet before a bid goes in: the grade, the inspector’s marks and the defect codes. You get the sheet too, and an explanation of what is on it, while you can still say no.
Getting it on the water
Booking the freight, arranging marine cover and issuing the bill of lading and export certificate. This is where the vessel name and the arrival date at Mombasa come from, and both appear on your order as soon as we have them.
Duty, customs and the port
The IDF, the customs entry and the port charges at Mombasa. Duty is calculated on the KRA CRSP schedule rather than on the price you paid, which is why the landed-cost figure on a listing is not simply the price plus freight.
Logbook and plates
Registration with the NTSA, the logbook in your name, and number plates before the vehicle reaches you. The car is handed over road-legal, not as a job you have to finish.
Somebody to ask
One number and one inbox, answered Monday to Saturday. Every stage above is written onto your order as it happens, so the answer to “where is my car” is on your dashboard before you have to ask it.
